The Origin of Irving T. Duck

Why a real-life agent decided to speak up

Irving T. Duck is the avatar of Mark Druckmiller, a real-life real estate agent based in Michigan with Real Estate One. Mark is a Customer Care Coordinator, but in plain English he is a referral agent: he talks to buyers, sellers, renters, and anyone curious about real estate, then connects them to the right agent for their situation. He answers questions, explains how the process works for first-timers, and listens carefully to their stories.

Mark has moved across the United States several times over the last 45 years. That experience gave him a front-row seat to the problems and pitfalls buyers, sellers, and renters face in different markets, different neighborhoods, and different stages of life. He knows what it feels like to be new in a town, to trust a friendly voice on the phone, and to realize too late that the paperwork did not match the promise.

A family of builders

Mark's family was in the home construction and renovation business. Mark's dad and uncle were drywall and painting contractors with their own business. Mark's grandfather was in the Painter's union and was also a Hollywood set painter back in the early days of motion pictures. Mark worked for his father and uncle many summers.

30 years in the tech trenches

Before real estate, Mark spent 30 years in Information Technology, specializing in technical support, I.T. help desks, and customer service. He worked at companies including General Motors, IBM, AT&T Wireless, and many more. That background trained him to ask the right questions, document the details, and explain complicated problems in plain language.

From moving experience to real estate license

In 2010, after so many moves across the country — and so many instances where Mark honestly knew more than the agent sitting across the table — he decided to become a licensed real estate agent himself. Three years later, in 2013, he joined Real Estate One in Michigan at their corporate headquarters as an incoming lead referral agent. There, he answered a steady stream of questions from buyers, sellers, and renters, while connecting them to the right Real Estate One agent for their specific situation.

Why speak up now?

Before retiring, Mark decided it would be a good idea to spread awareness and information about real estate and the many problems and scams people run into everywhere. Irving T. Duck was born as a louder, more memorable way to deliver that message: a white-mulleted, Hawaiian-shirt-wearing, magnifying-glass-carrying duck who names the scam, explains the pattern, and helps the next person avoid the trap.

This site and the accompanying YouTube Shorts are not legal advice. They are the educational notes of an agent who has heard too many bad stories and wants to make sure the next one has a happier ending.

Pass it on

If a story here saves someone from a scam, Irving (and Mark) did their job.
